What does your week usually involve in regards to work?
I mainly work with URSU websites like ursu.ca, UniVerse, and The Owl website. I mainly make new pages, update the existing ones with the most recent information, and making the websites visually more attractive and easy to use.
Are you a student? If so, what year of study and what field?
I am a student currently in my 2nd year studying Bachelor of Honours in Computer Science.
How will this job help you in that field in the future and right now?
As someone studying in the IT field, working as a junior developer helps me to gain experience as a web developer. Working on both the front-end and backend, researching on various topics, and implementing them, is not only developing my technical skills but also improving my creativity and learning skills. I’ll be able to utilize the acquired skills in my course project works and for personal progression.
What do you like the most about your job?
The best thing about this job is that I am able to make students’ lives easier by making the website as informative and straightforward as possible. Being a student myself I know that we barely have time for ourselves, that’s why I try my best to make the website quickly accessible to gather necessary information.
What do you like most about working at URSU?
URSU provides a friendly environment with an amazing team who focuse on personal growth and development of employees and is open to new ideas. Having to work with a team that strives for excellence for everyone is exhilarating.
What are the biggest challenges or obstacles?
The biggest challenge I felt was to get into the work environment and keep up with the pace while working from home. Considering this is my first IT sector job I had to research and learn lots of new things before implementing them and take continuous feedback or help to improve my work.
How does your work benefit the students of the University of Regina and its Federated Colleges? How does it benefit the community?
My work is to make the website more accessible and informative so that students can take as much help as they can. Keeping the website up to date with various information regarding the health and dental plan, bus passes, events, and student discounts helps the students to have the right information and that too easily.
What have you learned during your time working with URSU?
Working here has taught me how to implement the knowledge I have gained from my courses and encourage me to work on something that I am so passionate about. I learnt how to work in a team, developed skills, and gained knowledge that I will be utilizing throughout my life.
