In 2021, URSU established two community fridges at the University of Regina Campus. One is located on the second floor of Riddell Centre, beside the Students’ Union front desk. The other fridge is located on the main floor of the First Nations University of Canada on the west side of the building. Both of the fridges are accessible 24/7, however, the availability of food depends on donations.
The purpose of this project is to provide students easy access to nutritious food whenever they need it, no questions asked. The fridges are based on the principles of mutual aid, which is when interventions to community problems are driven by community leadership. A supportive community is built through the cycle of giving and receiving between everyone involved. As such, we rely on community donations to keep the fridges full. High-demand items include fruits, vegetables, commercially packaged dairy products, and commercially packaged shelf-stable foods. A full list of accepted and prohibited items can be found on a poster by each fridge. If you have any questions about this project, please email food@ursu.ca for more information.
