What does your week usually involve in regards to work?
A typical work week for me is teaching training and educating employees about food. I will place food orders three times per week, schedule staff, create prep lists, and maintain a high standard of cleanliness and sanitation all while ensuring food is served at its highest quality.
Are you a student? If so, what year of study and what field?
I am currently enrolled at Red River College taking my Vocational Teaching Certificate, which has given me a new perspective on how to train my employees.
How will this job help you in that field in the future and right now?
As the kitchen manager, I am responsible for teaching a diverse team of employees about kitchen operations.
What do you like the most about your job?
URSU’s approach to putting students first and creating an environment of inclusion is one of its best qualities.
What are the biggest challenges or obstacles?
As the pandemic has hit the restaurant industry hard we have learned that diversification is paramount. We have created a production bakery to generate revenue for URSU, and are looking to expand that operation once restrictions are lifted.
How does your work benefit the students of the University of Regina and its Federated Colleges? How does it benefit the community?
The work I do here not only feeds the students at a reasonable cost but lets me stay involved in the community through URSU’s Cares Pantry.
What have you learned during your time working with URSU?
I am able to teach students a life skill like cooking so they don’t have to rely on prepackaged food and can maintain a healthier lifestyle.
