What is your position at the University of Regina Students’ Union?
Accounting Manager
What does your work week usually involve?
Ensuring that the financial position of URSU is in alignment with the budget and the Board’s Mission, Vision, and Goals. I oversee the accounting department and ensure that the output of our financial data is held to the high standards that URSU demands. I continuously work towards improvement driven by the needs of our members – transparency, efficiency, and alignment. I also ensure that staff is paid accurately and on time.
What year of study are you in currently and in which faculty are you enrolled?
My background is accounting and I have held senior-level positions in the private sector as well as education. I am currently working on my MBA through the Australian Institute of Business.
What would you like to do as an occupation in the future?
I’m currently living the dream. URSU has provided an opportunity to continuously invigorate me, through process improvement, strategic direction, and professional development. I am committed to URSU for the foreseeable future.
How does your work benefit the students of the University of Regina and its Federated Colleges? How does it benefit the community?
Accounting ensures that URSU’s assets are safeguarded and that all transactions being processed are completed in alignment with accounting standards and controls as well as URSU’s policies. Accounting also distributes and accounts for funding to student groups and societies, and students in need.
What do you like the most about your position? What do you like most about working at URSU?
I enjoy the challenges, the diversity, and the fact that people can be themselves at URSU.
What are the biggest challenges or obstacles?
The biggest challenge as part of the senior management team is transitioning to new platforms and ideas every year and ensuring that we can deliver based on the expectations of the oncoming elected student officials. This challenge is accepted with enthusiasm, and change is always welcomed. The diversity allows us to approach the services we deliver with comprehensive points of view, allowing us to be agile, and deliver programming and supports where students need it most.
What have you learned during your time so far with URSU?
Learning never stops. URSU not only provides services for the student population but also provides real-life training to our employees and board members which will be indispensable in their future careers.
Why did you run for a position in the Students’ Union?
I receive a lot of utility from giving back to students and being a proponent of positive change. I have a long history of being part of Education and non-profit organizations.
How do you want to help students?
By being the point person for education on financial matters of the students union. To teach and explain the importance of financial stewardship at a young age for them to emulate in the future.
What are your plans to achieve this?
Continuous improvement, transparency, and commitment.
How can students help?
Become involved. Give back to the communities you are a part of. Do the best you can with anything you are involved with, and never back down.
