What does your work week usually involve?
Overseeing the organization, administration, and financial situation of URSU. Being the representative of URSU for human-resource-related issues (typically in conjunction with the General Manager). Managing the Budget throughout the year and ensuring that any variances and emerging trends are reported promptly to the Executive Committee and the Board Signing Authority of URSU. Overseeing development and delivery of new and existing URSU Services. Performing other similar duties as they arise or are delegated by the Board of Directors
What year of study are you in currently and in which faculty are you enrolled?
I’m in the second year of my studies in the faculty of Computer Science
What would you like to do as an occupation in the future?
I would love to be in a management position for an IT company.
How will this position help you in that field in the future and right now?
This position is helping me learn a lot about management and HR which will be very much needed for the position that I’m hoping to get in my career.
How does your work benefit the students of the University of Regina and its Federated Colleges? How does it benefit the community?
Currently, we are running Bursaries for the students in immediate need of the money. Also, whenever I’m contacted by a student regarding any complaint or problem I respond actively to the situation the student is in. I believe the work we as Execs are doing here really makes a difference in students’ lives and we are working as hard as we can to make student life on campus easier and sorted as possible.
What do you like the most about your position?
What I love the most about my job position is that it is helping me to do better every day for the students and for my fellow colleagues. And also all the learning about the operational and financial aspects of this organization. It keeps me on my toes for whatever is coming next, it keeps me socially active, makes me meet new people, and brings on the opportunity to learn and help others as much as I can.
What do you like most about working at URSU?
URSU is a non-profit organization whose only one interest is to help students in any manner they can and bring on a very helpful and welcoming environment for all the students in need. This union keeps pushing for what’s best for the students but also is working hard for the sustainability programs and on projects for the coming future which will not only help students but also society. Moreover, the union is very diverse and multicultural which lets me learn a lot about different cultures and worldviews.
What are the biggest challenges or obstacles?
So far the biggest challenge was to understand how the union works and how to proceed whenever there is an emergency situation for any student or even a staff member. But these challenges and obstacles are worth taking on as I know I’m here working for the greater good for the student community and me and the Union are making a difference.
What have you learned during your time so far with URSU?
URSU is giving me a great opportunity to learn how to manage and execute plans for the interest of students. It has helped me learn a lot about teamwork and has given me a golden chance to learn about diverse cultures and different world views that I cannot even imagine existed.
Why did you run for a position in the Students’ Union?
I ran for a position at URSU because I knew it will be the best path where I can support students in the best way possible, help them, and also the best learning opportunity one can get in a student’s life. It is preparing me as a person on whom people can depend and can always reach out for help. Also, I ran because this was the only way that I could have explored so many different cultures, how to react to different situations in the least harmful manner possible, and bring the best out of me as a human being.
How do you want to help students? What are your plans to achieve this?
I want to help students in any possible way that I can. If any student comes to me for help, I will first analyze the situation the student is in and will react accordingly as quickly as I can. Moreover, I will take help from any resource I can gather and any person I can reach out to so that the student in need is put out of a miserable situation as soon as possible.
How can students help?
Students can help a lot with this. They can make any student aware of the difficulty to reach out to us so that we can help them in every possible way. Also, they can provide feedback and give us any new ideas they can come up with so that we can improve our performance and build a better future.
