Every year we at the University of Regina Students’ Union welcome thousands of new faces to our campus with Welcome Week. Throughout the week there was movies, music, munchies and more! Here’s a recap of the biggest party of the school year!
The eventful extravaganza began Wednesday (Sept 6th) with the URSU Club Fair, where students were able to talk with our stellar student-run clubs, societies and associations. For more info on what our clubs get up to please visit campusvibe.ca/ursu. Our societies were also out on the Dr. Lloyd Barber Academic Green (The Green) with lots of awesome activities and crazy games for students. The first night of Welcome Week was topped off with our first Cultural Showcase at the First Nations University of Canada. The night was electric with music, dancing, laughing and learning as we celebrated the diversity that makes the UofR so great.
Visitors to the campus enjoyed the Local Market on Thursday out on the Green. They took in the flavours of the city as local Farmers Market vendors and food trucks were on hand so students and staff could grab some great grub while checking out the scene on the Green! Our always-popular Outdoor Movie Night was also on the Green Thursday as we soaked in the songs on Moana. Admission to the movie was free, along with the popcorn, and Storybook Princess Parties provided a real Disney Princess. Those looking for a reason to don their classiest attire were able to enjoy Casino Night and it’s After Party, put on by the Hill Business Students Society at the Owl.
Throughout the week students could cool down in our one of refreshing gardens located on the Green. Maybe they chose to take one down and pass it around in the Barber’s Bay Beer Gardens or stay dry while wetting their whistle with a tasty mocktail in the Sandbar Dry Gardens. Friday featured the first ever University of Regina Night Owl 5K put on by GMS Queen City Marathon. The runners started in between Paskwāw and Wakpá Towers and went around the Conexus Arts Centre before returning to the towers and resting on the Green.
The Welcome Fest Concert later that night, capped off the week. New students were introduced to some of the fun they’ll be having throughout the year while getting to make some musical memories that will last a lifetime. The line-up for the concert featured local acts and performers from across Canada, including Ageless, XANA, The Stoop Kids, The Boom Booms, Close Talker and our big fish headliner DJ Shub.
As always, Welcome Week is our gift to our members, the students of the University of Regina, and a way for us, the UofR Students’ Union, to share the excitement of our city with students from around the world. We find ways to help students get the most out of campus life, in their scholarly and social pursuits, without worrying about the price of having fun. We can’t wait until next year!
