URSU and Migrant Rights Network joined Status for All rallies across Canada to demand equal status and the results are to show. We raised our voices to provide status for all and gathered outside the office of Mr. Michael Kram, MP for Regina-Wascana, located in Regina, Saskatchewan on August 23rd, 2020.
We are happy to see the that Canadian Government has launched new public policies to provide permanent residency to international students without any specific criteria. We are also encouraged that there is now a policy in place for other temporary residents too. For more information, please click here.
While the program announced on April 14th creates a partial and short-term opening to PR for some it does not change the fundamentally temporary nature of the immigration system. Each year hundreds of thousands of people come with temporary permits. The new program only includes migrants with select work experience and denies status to anyone who is unemployed, even in an economic downturn. URSU continues to be concerned about the hardships facing migrants, especially international students, during this time and will continue to work until there is Status for All!
