About the campaign
The URSU Indigenous Solidarity Working Group is chaired by URSU Indigenous Board representative Taryn Acoose. The group was established with a profound commitment to enhancing the experiences and addressing the needs of Indigenous students at the University of Regina.
Our Core Commitments:
Advocacy and Services for Indigenous Students: We are dedicated to improving our advocacy efforts and services for Indigenous students. This is achieved through collaborative partnerships with the three First Nations University Student Associations and the Canadian Federation of Students Circle of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis students.
Education on Settler Allyship: An integral part of our mission is to educate both our internal organizational staff and our general membership about the meaning and importance of settler allyship. We believe that knowledge and understanding are key to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for Indigenous students.
Support for Indigenous Groups and Organizations: Our group actively supports student and community Indigenous groups and organizations. We strive to provide assistance and solidarity wherever possible, recognizing the importance of community involvement and support in our initiatives.
Last year, from March 20th – 24th, URFA and URSU collaborated on our campus’ first ever Labour Fair, which featured guest presentations from organized labour leaders in various courses at the University of Regina. It served as an opportunity for students and faculties to engage with various labour organizations and also for students to understand the various occupational or job issues in the industry they are going to enter. The Labour Fair emphasized the added rights and benefits that a union brings into the workplace, how unions help narrow the gap between rich and poor in our society and the importance of unions’ work in defending our social safety net, equity and democracy. The week-long event also featured a daily outreach fair, where labour activists came to campus to engage with students in more personal conversations about their rights as current and future workers, and highlight both equity and social justice issues. This year, URFA and URSU are proud to announce that we will be holding our second inaugural Labour Fair, to take place from Monday February 26th to Friday March 1st, 2024.
